9/5/2025 EMSS Division Communication

September 5, 2025

EMSS Team Members:

Happy Friday, EMSS team, and I hope everyone is enjoying the return of vibrancy to our campus, with fall semester in full swing! I want to share with you a few important updates from our division and the campus at large:

Reminder: EMSS Fall Welcome Next Week

I hope to see you all at our EMSS Fall Welcome next Thursday, Sept. 11 from 9-11 a.m. in the Great Hall. A calendar invite was sent to the division – if you did not receive one, reach out to your department leadership or Natalie Raquel Acuña at nra14@humboldt.edu. We will have light refreshments, and you can expect important updates related to personnel, enrollment, and the introduction of new recognition efforts.

Enrollment Progress

We are definitely going to have something to celebrate once enrollment numbers are final after census at the end of September! As of this morning, enrollment is up 4.2% compared to last year’s final numbers, and we currently have 6,296 students enrolled, up 247 since this date last year. I will send a campus communication once numbers are final, and our division Lead Team is already making plans to celebrate all of your hard work.

The Return of Green and Gold Days

Green & Gold Days are returning! The Gustwurrak Student Activities Center is looking for your help in bringing back this beloved tradition. Every Thursday, show your Lumberjack spirit by wearing Green & Gold. Together, let’s celebrate our campus pride, strengthen our community, and make this tradition shine once again. Next Thursday’s division Fall Welcome is a great time to start taking part in this campus tradition.

Students Needed

We are looking for students to join the Gutswurrak Student Activities Center (SAC) Student Advisory Committee for 25-26. The committee serves as a vehicle for the expression of opinions and desires of students with regard to the activities, recreation, space and budget priorities for the SAC. Please encourage students to apply. Applications are due on Fri. 9/12 at hum.link/committee.

Accolades

I would like to recognize the incredible efforts of both the Housing and Facilities teams in the opening of our newest housing facility, Hinarr Hu Moulik. This milestone moment brought more than 500 students into the building, and their shining, happy faces said it all! The Facilities Management team worked tirelessly with the contractor to keep the project on time, on budget, and to ensure that every detail came together just as we envisioned. A special shout-out goes to our maintenance and custodial colleagues, who prepared our buildings for occupancy after an exceptionally busy summer of conferences, maintenance, and repairs.

Equally impressive was the performance of the Housing & Residence Life team, who executed a nearly flawless move-in for more than 850 first-year students on August 16, and then seamlessly continued their high-level customer service while greeting another 1,300 upper-division students the following week. In total, Housing welcomed over 2,100 students to campus in just one week, which is an extraordinary accomplishment. I also want to extend my appreciation to our Admissions team members, who not only pitched in during housing opening but also conducted tours during the Hinarr Hu Moulik Open House. A special thank you goes out to Baron Parks and Sandy Younger for their collaboration.

The Residence Life team pulled off an incredible week of events that helped students build connections, discover resources, and feel at home in our community. From a campus-wide Rubber Duck Hunt that introduced them to important campus resources, to engaging programs like the Housing Talent Show, and even opportunities to explore the local community through visits to the Arcata Farmer’s Market; our team made sure there was something for everyone. Each of these events drew 150–250+ participants, showcasing just how impactful and engaging they were. A huge shout-out to our Resident Advisors and Residence Life Coordinators for creating a true sense of belonging for our students.

The Orientation team, led by Ash Hansen and Ravin Craig, did amazing work in welcoming all of our new students to campus alongside our partners across campus and in the PBLCs, including our largest-ever numbers of transfer orientation participants.

Thank you all for your dedication, teamwork, and commitment to creating such a positive start to the academic year. It is because of your collective efforts that our students feel welcomed, supported, and excited to call Humboldt home.

New Hires/Position Changes

Please join us in giving a warm welcome to our newest Housing & Residence Life team members:

Matt Macari, Housing Systems Operations Coordinator; Cheyenne Wise, Residence Life Coordinator, Canyon; Matthew Wyman, Residence Life Coordinator, the Hill; Wayne Coleman, Residence Life Coordinator, Creekview / Cypress; Annika Nelson, Residence Life Coordinator, College Creek. Our RLCs kicked off their roles with intense and extensive training over the summer, and Matt is already diving in and taking on everything we’ve thrown his way. Each of them had to hit the ground running, and we are so excited to have such a talented group on board. We can’t wait to see the impact they’ll have in supporting our students and strengthening our community. Welcome to the team!

Events

Friday Night Markets: Sept. 5, 12 and 26, from 5-8 p.m. – Cal Poly Humboldt Presents is proud to sponsor the new Friday Night Markets on the Arcata Plaza this fall. Join us tonight or later this month for three vibrant Fridays celebrating local culture with live music, delicious food and drink, artisan vendors, and fun for all ages. These events are designed to welcome new Cal Poly Humboldt students and bring the community together. Our sponsorship will help provide Bright & Green reusable dishware for food vendors to use for orders to increase our sustainability.

Thank you for all of your work to make the start of this semester a fun and successful one for our students!

Take care of yourselves and each other,

Chrissy Holliday
