9/29/2023 EMSS Division Communication

September 28, 2023

EMSS Team Members:

I am hoping you have all had a productive and enjoyable week, and are coasting towards the weekend. I wanted to take this opportunity to pause and share some information regarding recent and ongoing work in our division, or elsewhere that impacts our work and our students.

CSU Tuition Rates

At its recent meeting, the CSU Board of Trustees voted to increase tuition over the next few years, as part of a plan to stabilize budgets across the CSU and mitigate the impacts of inflation on our operations. The increase will begin with the 2024-25 academic year, and annual tuition costs will increase by $342 for a full-time, undergraduate student in that first year. The approved proposal also included a significant commitment of financial aid to help offset the impact to students with the most financial need. The work that lies ahead for all of us involves managing budgets responsibly, while never losing sight of the public and student trust that comes to us as part of our work. Visit the CSU notice regarding the tuition decision for more details about the approved plan.

Division Connections

Though I could not attend, I was happy to hear that a number of our EMSS colleagues gathered last week for a Happy Hour that was planned via the online division social group. The work we do is often exhausting and stressful, and finding time to connect on a human level, outside of work when schedules allow, can be so rewarding. I look forward to being able to join another time, and to seeing what other casual meet-ups you all design.

Humboldt First

Many of you are aware of the Humboldt First program, which showcases our campus commitment to students from the local area, known most directly because of the scholarship available to graduates from area high schools who choose to attend Cal Poly Humboldt. I am proud to note that this year will see a renewed focus on that effort, thanks to the leadership of Visit Experience Coordinator Sulaina Banks, who has worked with colleagues across campus, within our K-12 community, and elsewhere, to plan special celebrations in key schools throughout the month of October. As part of that collaboration, high school seniors who are currently on track to meet A-G requirements are invited to a special celebration with campus representatives in which they receive certificates, information about scholarships available to them, and an enhanced understanding of what it means to choose Cal Poly Humboldt as their college home. Special thanks to Sulaina for her detailed planning, Sierra Farmer for her work in verifying A-G status for the lists of students, and to all others working to ensure the success of this special outreach effort.

JGC Rec Room Now Open

As part of ongoing efforts to enhance our student experience and sense of belonging on campus, the Jolly Giant Commons 1st floor Recreation Room is now open 10am to 10pm daily. Check out the new living room style with 3 big screen TVs, gaming LCD screen, games, resource center, bean bag seating and study area with plug-in charging stations. Special daily TV programs along with weekly movie nights!

Slate CRM/Admissions Update

The Slate re-launch project continues, and the team is laser focused on ensuring we are prepared for the Fall 2024 application opening Oct. 1. Current plans call for the release of the first batch of decisions in mid-November, leveraging a new Applicant Status page students will access via myHumboldt, in addition to traditional letters. This decision timeline brings us more into line with institutions like ours around the country, and the time between application and first decision release will allow us to build excitement among applicants about their Cal Poly Humboldt decision. We will make good use of that time building relationships for the next phase of their student journey. Once initial decisions are released, new applicants will continue to learn about their decisions on a rolling basis.
