6/7/2024 EMSS Division Communication

June 7, 2024

EMSS Team Members:

Good morning, and happy Friday, all. It was wonderful to see so many of you at last week’s EMSS End-of-the-Year gathering – I know I enjoyed the calming crafts, the chance to interact with all of you – and, of course, the visits with our furry therapy friends! Thanks to all who came out and supported the event – a special thanks to Jess Etter for her top-notch planning services; Joellen Peterson for her assistance with planning the room set-up; Ravin Craig for coming early and leaving late, to make sure all the set-up and clean-up went off without a hitch; Santi Menjivar and Kaitlin Obrien for saving the day with enhanced sound support; Mira Friedman for extra clean-up help; and Morgan McEvoy and the entire Humboldt Catering team for always making our creative food imaginings come to life! As I said last week, I am honored to work alongside each of you every day, and the impact you have on our students, each other, and the rest of this campus and community matters so much – thank you for being part of the EMSS family.

Black Student Success Funding

Cal Poly Humboldt has been awarded $210,000 from the Chancellor’s Office in support of Black Student Success efforts that were proposed after the completion of an inventory by all 23 campuses. This will be only the start of a new phase of this work for our campus, and EMSS is proud to work alongside our colleagues in Academic Affairs, particularly the Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, to bring to life some of the recommendations our campus colleagues made last year. The funds will be used in order to: enhance outreach and recruitment to Black students and others from underrepresented communities, including expansion of our campus visit opportunities; support an International Service Learning trip, co-sponsored by the Umoja Center, to an international location of cultural relevance to our Black students; enhanced travel and professional development funds for Umoja Center students; the creation of an ODEI Black Student Success Equity fellow position; the establishment of a faculty development fund in support of Black student success; and a campus art project or installation that enhances visible representation of the Black community on our campus. Initial planning work is underway this summer, with the intent to launch more visible work alongside our campus partners when everyone returns to campus in the fall, so stay tuned for additional information. The CSU has indicated there will likely be recurring grant opportunities after this pilot year, and our hope is to position Cal Poly Humboldt competitively for those funds, so that we may continue enhancing our equity and inclusion efforts, as well as the success of our Black faculty, staff, and students.

Campus Building Access Plan

I wanted to share again the information sent via email to all of campus about the shifts in access to buildings, including the summer pilot that is currently underway. The plan seeks to improve building security and energy efficiency and addresses concerns raised by faculty and staff in recent years. This FAQ provides more clarity and context for the way this is implemented, and helps to address concerns related to accessibility, community events, and student access. I urge you to show patience with our FM colleagues if you encounter any difficulties related to this plan, and to share any concerns forward for solution. The primary reason for summer pilot implementation was to allow us to work out any issues with a much smaller number of people on campus, to set fall up for a better implementation.

Humboldt Dining

College Creek Marketplace is open most days 9am to 4pm, and running a "Buy any breakfast entree or sandwich and get a free cup of coffee" special. Visit Dine on Campus for hours.

Summer Conferences

Summer conferences are starting on campus. Please help welcome visitors who will be staying in our residence halls. These include youth pre-college groups, chamber and brass & Sequoia music groups, Upward Bound, Running & Volleyball Camps, Forestry and Human Ethology groups & Dell Arte folks.
