10/27/2023 EMSS Division Communication
EMSS Team Members:
I hope you have all had a great week, and are preparing for a little bit of relaxation this weekend! Fall has definitely arrived, and I am loving the slightly cooler temperatures and all the fall color! A quick congratulations to all who made last week’s Lumberjack Weekend a success – families and students were engaged with activities each day, and it was great to see so many of you at events across campus. While colleagues across campus help make the weekend all that it is, we know that our teams in the Gutswurrak Student Activities Center and Office of Student Life play a special role, and I appreciate their efforts to support our campus vibrancy. Work is already underway to identify dates and begin formalizing activities for next year, so stay tuned!
GI 2025
A team from Cal Poly Humboldt attended the CSU’s Graduation Initiative 2025 Symposium earlier this week in San Diego, alongside myself and Provost Jenn Capps. Our team included:
Peggy Metzger, Executive Director of Enrollment Management and Financial Aid
Mitch Mitchell, AVP of Student Success and Dean of Students
Jenni Robinson Reisinger, Registrar
Rosamel Benavides-Garb, AVP of the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
Carmen Bustos Works, AVP of Academic Programs and Dean of Undergraduate and Graduate Studies
Mike Le, Director of Institutional Research & Reporting
Jim Woglom, Senate Chair
We learned more about progress to date on our student success efforts and began the conversation about what comes next for the system’s focus on graduation and closing equity gaps for our students. I was proud to be part of this team and look forward to sharing more in the months to come about this important work.
Reporting Incidents of Concern and Complaints
In order to streamline our processes, the campus now has a one-stop web hub for reporting incidents of concern or complaints regarding students, staff, faculty, or administrators. The reporting site makes it simple for someone to identify the type of concern or complaint they have, and begin the process with the appropriate contacts, forms, and necessary information to complete a report. This was developed as a direct result of feedback form our campus community, and it is one step towards increased transparency and support for those in need of assistance.
Student Marketing Center
Are you trying to create campus awareness of your special event and activities? Need help increasing student turnout? The Student Marketing Center, now part of our Strategic Student communications department, is fully open and ready for business! Please visit our website smc.humboldt.edu and click the Submit a Request button. Watch this short video for more information.
Dining Promo
Looking for a great deal? This semester, buy any pastry at a campus coffee shop and get a free coffee at Library Café, Kinetic Koffee (Depot) or CCMP.
Fall Commencement
The Fall Commencement ceremony will be held Friday, December 15th. Faculty and staff are welcome to participate in the processional but are asked to register to participate by November 17th. Faculty and staff in need of renting regalia to participate in the procession can do so at Herff Jones Faculty Direct by November 1st. All cost of rental regalia for faculty and staff who wish to participate in commencement will be covered by the Provosts office. Items ordered through Herff Jones Direct will be available for pick up at The Campus Store on the Plaza around December 1st.
Halloween Celebrations
The Student Business Services building 1st and 2nd floors have embraced the creepy, crawly, scary, and fun spirit of Halloween! Come over on Halloween Day and check out all the festivities. Many of us have participated in a door decorating contest. Our very own Mona Pargee and her amazing student staff members, Riley & Sandra, have created the creepiest, spookiest, bone chilling-est door for EMSS that will surely cause you nightmares! In fact, we won the Staff Council contest as the “spookiest” door! On Halloween day, come see the Monster’s Inc. inspired doors in SBS, as well as others that have jumped into the spirit! Be sure to stop by the Welcome Center in the Admissions area and check out the spooky spider webs! Next, stop by the lobby area between the Cashier’s and Financial Aid for games and treats, and before you leave, be sure to come say hello, show off your Halloween spirit and have a treat at the Office of Enrollment Management, SBS295.
Happy Halloween!!!!!
Accolades
Shout out to the CARE team for yet again hitting record number of CARE reports and Basic Needs support. As of 10/19/23, they have supported 644 cases through meal swipes, general CARE support, transitional housing, etc. We know this is an essential part of our student success efforts, and I am grateful for the time, energy, and care that is given to this work.

Join me in giving a warm EMSS welcome to Whitney Strouse, our new Conference & Event Services External Lease Coordinator, who started Monday, October 23rd.
