1/16/2026 EMSS Division Communication

January 16, 2026

EMSS Team Members:

Good morning, team, and welcome back to campus and - almost - the spring semester! I hope everyone had a wonderful winter break and was able to spend some time relaxing, even if you are one of our team members who spent a portion of the break on call because of your student support duties. I know the coming week will be packed with activities and low-level chaos as students scramble to finish up all the minor details they have left during the first week of class.

As your time allows, please take a few minutes to learn more about happenings across our division and the campus:

Volunteers Needed for PreviewPlus

The Office of Admissions needs additional support for their Spring Preview PLUS program - as a reminder, our Preview programs have some of the highest yield rates of any effort we undertake to ensure admitted students enroll in the fall, so this is an excellent way to contribute to our enrollment goals.

Spring Preview PLUS is our extension program to Spring Preview. We bus students, who typically are not able to afford to travel to Humboldt, up to participate in Spring Preview. Additionally, they get additional programming that is not available to Preview attendees.

Why do we need additional support? This year, we will be hosting both First-Year and Transfer students at the same time. Additional support is needed to provide adequate attention to both student populations. Additionally, on Friday, First-Year and Transfer students must have separate programming.

Preview PLUS students will be divided into three units of 18 students. Each unit will be accompanied at all times by two to three professional staff members (one will be a lead), as well as Admissions Ambassadors. Volunteer duties will vary depending on the student population and the time slot(s) you are assigned. Please see the GoogleForm for more information.

There is a time commitment to this effort, besides working the Preview PLUS event that includes attending an onboarding meeting (1 hour) in January; attending trainings (2-3 hours a month) in February and March; and completing any necessary trainings and background required by the Youth Protection Program policy.

We need the EMSS division to step forward to ensure this important programming is a success. If you are willing to provide additional support, please complete this GoogleForm.

EMSS Spring Welcome

Make plans to join your division colleagues next Friday, Jan. 23, from 3-4:30 p.m. in the Great Hall for our Spring Welcome event. We will have a special visit from new President Carvajal, as well as some enjoyable activities and updates - including announcement of the next Kick Axe awardees! I look forward to seeing you there!

Student Conduct Advisors Needed

The Dean of Students Office is looking for individuals willing to serve as advisors for students during the conduct process.  This is a supportive role to ensure students are knowledgeable about their rights, and training is provided. Please email dos@humboldt.edu if you are interested or would like additional information.

CFS Data Warehouse training

Campus is transitioning away from OBI Finance and will be hosting a series of trainings for CFS Data Warehouse starting Jan. 22. If you are still using OBI, please attend one or all of the sessions! New Hires and Position Changes

Welcome Elias Pence, (recently in EOP) to the new LGBTQ Center as coordinator, and to Georgina Cerda Salvarrey as the coordinator for the new Dreamer's Center!

I look forward to seeing all of you at the Division Welcome, and am excited for a wonderful start to the spring semester. Welcome back!

Take care of yourselves and each other,
