1/31/2025 EMSS Division Communication

January 30, 2025

EMSS Team Members:

Happy Friday, EMSS team –  I hope your week has been going well. As your time allows, please take a look at the below updates related to campus and division efforts.

Nominate an Outstanding Student

The nominations for Outstanding Student of the Year are open and due Feb. 28. The ceremony in April incorporates multiple awards from Academic Excellence to Co-Curricular Achievements. These awards are one of the ways in which Humboldt recognizes the incredible contributions that our students make every year. Learn more and submit your nomination here. Any questions, email osl@humboldt.edu.

Visit The Campus Store

Need a quick bite? Stop by The Campus Store at the top floor of the Gutswurrak Student Activities Center. We have a new cooler stocked by our Dining team.  And check out all the new clothing designs we have on display. We're also bringing technology back like Apple computers at our special educational discount along with our own Apple service team.

URPC Divisional Budget Reports

As you know, the University is engaged in the hard work of budget reductions, and each unit has been modeling reductions at the 5%, 7% and 9% levels. Last Spring, the University Resource Planning Committee (URPC) asked the Vice Presidents or a designee from each of the seven divisions to present to campus their priorities and plans for budget reductions as well as likely implications. We invited the campus community to attend and engage. These divisional reports helped the URPC and the campus community have a broader understanding of the budget and impacts to the divisions. We are going to continue this practice this year, and ask you to please save the dates:

Friday, February 21, 2025 from 1p.m.-3p.m.: Divisional presentations: Administrative Affairs, President’s Office, Advancement, and University Wide.

Friday, February 28, 2025 from 12:30p.m.-3p.m.: Divisional presentations: Academic Affairs, Enrollment Management and Student Success and Athletics.

Specific time blocks for the presentations as well as Zoom links will be available at least a week prior to the presentations, so be on the lookout. Thank you in advance for your engagement.

Community Conversations Update

The campus conversations around last April’s events, as led by the Campus Well-Being and Stewardship Group, have been going well. Next week, the final two opportunities to be participate include:

  • Feb. 4: Associated Students | NHE 106 (Hyflex), 12:30–1:30 p.m.
  • Feb. 7: Campus Open Forum | Authors Hall, LIB 202A (in-person), 11 a.m.–1 p.m.

Each session will include facilitated discussions using methods like the World Café to gather input. Light refreshments or meals will be provided. I encourage everyone to take part in this healing process at whatever level you are comfortable.

New Hires/Position Changes

Brenda Perez, the coordinator for El Centro, will be temporarily supporting the establishment of a Dreamers Center on campus, acting as a liaison for undocumented/DREAMER/AB 540 students as well as students from mixed status families.

Accolades

Special thanks to Housing & Residence Life, Dean of Students, Student Health, Facilities Management, Marketing & Communication and other campus partners who have worked incredibly hard over the past two weeks to support the relocation of students from Campus Apartments. It has been a stressful time for our students, and has demanded a lot from all who have been part of the effort, but I am grateful for the care everyone has shown, and the unwavering commitment to student health and safety.
