Technology Topics and Resources

January 15, 2021

Dear Faculty & Staff,

We want to update you on a few technology topics and resources for you and your students.

For everyone:
By mid-March, everyone will need to sign up for DUO multi-factor authentication to help keep our files and systems safe. We encourage you to do so when you have a few minutes, and ask that you encourage your students to do so as well. Don’t hesitate to ask for help.

For your students:
Tech Requests: We want to ensure students have a computer and reliable internet access to succeed in your classes and will help them if they don’t. We can also help with headphones and webcams if they need them. We’ll reach out to them to check, but please encourage your students to request any technology they need: https://hsu.link/student-tech.

Software: Students can access campus software in several ways: using vlab.humboldt.edu (easiest for most applications), remotely accessing our lab computers (best for intensive programs like ArcGIS, but will require students to use DUO multi-factor authentication), or by installing software on their home computer.

Lab & Printing Access: Once face-to-face classes begin in March, printing kiosks and some computer lab access will be available. Before face-to-face classes, we want to keep campus access to a minimum to keep everyone safe, but two printing kiosks are available at the J and College Creek to support early printing needs. Remember to do your wellness self-check and wear a face covering.

Accessibility: We’re here to help you support your students by making your course material accessible. All we need is permission to access your Canvas course, and we’ll take care of everything behind the scenes.

Instructional supplies shipping: If your department needs to mail items to students, the Library can help! Request for shipping of instructional supplies and equipment.

For faculty & staff:
Many items such as computers, monitors, and webcams are available for loan from ITS. There are a few “limited quantity” teaching tools such as tablets and document cameras available as well. See the full list of what’s available and request them here. If you need technology specific to your program, please work with your department or college to address that need.

If you need software, check Software Center (Windows) or Self Service (Mac) on your HSU-owned computer. Using your own computer? Many titles are available remotely or for home installation.

We’re wishing you the very best start of the semester.
